I’d like to step back in time to gentler days
When a bakery cake iced with fat sugar roses
Or a brand new pair of black patent leather shoes
Was all it took to thrill me for weeks on end.
I’d like to revisit those earliest days
When a new school year was a chance to start over
With fresh erasers, pencil cases, crayon boxes all ready and hopeful,
And notebooks were clean slates, just waiting to be written in and doodled on.
I’d like to refill all the pages of all the calendars of my life
With hours spent with those long-gone, cherished ones who now live in my heart,
Back when my only concern was whether the pink dress with the polka dots
Was nice enough for me to wear in their company.
